Relaxing Sleep Ideas

A very peaceful and relaxing sleep is what we need every night. When you are completely relaxed, sleep will follow.

Sleep is the natural periodic state of rest for the mind and body, in which the eyes usually close and consciousness is completely or partially lost. There is a decrease in bodily movement and unresponsiveness. During sleep the brain goes through a cycle of brain-wave activity that includes intervals of dreaming.

Usually seven to nine hours of sleep for adult humans is sufficient. This keeps a person alert, helps maintain good memory and problem solving, reduced the risk of accidents, and this definitely leads to better health.

Your bedtime routine should help you begin to prepare for sleep. Allow time for this part of the relaxation process. Most of us need a period that enables the body and mind to adjust to the inevitability of sleep. Try to establish a routine to go to bed at the same time every night. Doing something relaxing can help you to get a good night sleep.

Ideas to Help You Fall Asleep

Here are some things to do to help bring calmness and peaceful relaxation for you to fall asleep.

• Make sure your bedroom is peaceful with no television on.

• Make sure your bedroom is comfortably warm and well-ventilated.

• Stop any work or activities at least two hours before going to bed, and allow time to relax.

• Do some stretching exercises or self-massage to ease muscle tension. It would be even better if someone could give you a massage.

• Do some breathing exercises.

• Take a warm bath with lavender or other relaxing scent of bath salts, bubble bath or essential oils, along with scented candles to help aid sleep.

• A white noise machine is very useful in helping you get some sleep by tuning out the disturbing sounds of your surroundings.

• Read a book.

• Listen to some relaxing music, or some type of sleep inducing music sounds to help you feel drowsy before turning out the lights to sleep.

• Try to do some relaxation exercises focusing on muscle relaxation and releasing the mind from busy thoughts.

• Have some hot milk, a chamomile tea or herbal infusion.

• Make sure you have a relaxing bedroom with a comfortable bed and pillow.

Don’t toss and turn if you have trouble falling asleep. If you start to feel restless, get up and spend some time away from bed, relaxing or listening to soothing music, before returning to bed again.
