Relaxation Can Control Your Stress!

Did you know that 90% of doctor visits are for stress related symptoms? Stress hits us every day from all directions. Maybe it’s sitting in the midst of highway traffic jam when you are already late for an important appointment. Or how about the bill you forgot to pay? The battles today are at work stress with demanding employers, uncontrollable traffic, annoying neighbors, partners, and children and then there are taxes!

As moms we have full schedules. Our days are full of work, errands and children’s activities. Stress in Moms is very common because Moms just don't take the time for theirselves.

These are just some of the annoying little stress triggers that we handle every day. What about the larger issues such as retirement, moving, divorce, or the death of a loved one or friend. Now that can really be stressful.

When we feel as though we are under pressure, our bodies react with a rise in blood pressure, tightening of muscles and accelerated breathing. These physical symptoms are generally referred to as “fight or flight” responses.

Stress has been blamed for various emotional and psychological problems such as:

anxiety

• Heart palpitations

• Irritation

• Depression

• Lack of sleep

• Poor work or school performance

• Headaches

These are common signs that a person is stressed. A person being aware that they are stressed can find out what kind of stress is affecting them, and look for possible solutions to avoid stress in the future and lessen the ill effects of stress in their life.

Different Kinds of Stress

Acute stress: This is the most common type of stress. It occurs in daily life and is easily cured.

Episodic acute stress: The person who experiences this kind of stress is always on the go and always worried and in a rush. This is also someone who accepts too many responsibilities.

Chronic stress: This is the type of stress that makes people very unhappy about their lives. This may be people who are trapped in a unhappy marriage, or extreme poverty. This person may feel that life is hopeless and there is no chance he is ever going to recover from their unhappy situation. Chronic stress is the type that kills people either due to heart attack, suicide or even violence. A person suffering from chronic stress should seek professional help.

WHAT IS STRESS?

Stress is a mentally, emotionally, or physical strain upsetting condition. It can affect your physical health by increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, muscular tension, irritability, and depression.

Chemically, stress is a condition that your body enters as the result of a message received from your brain telling it to prepare to run or fight. The brain tells the adrenal glands to send a rush of two hormones (adrenaline and noradrenaline) to the muscles in preparation for them to respond to a fear or a threat.

It is the job of the brain to protect the body. It accomplishes this by telling the noradrenaline to redirect blood flow from lower priority areas of your body (like skin or your abdomen) to the muscles to give you a “power boost.”

At the same time, the brain is also telling the adrenaline to speed up your breathing to take in more oxygen to feed the work being done on the muscles with the noradrenaline.

Unfortunately, when you can’t make a decision about how to react (fight or flight); these two hormones are caught in the middle waiting for you to decide what you want them to do. Since you aren’t doing that, the only choice they have is to cause vomiting, make you tremble, panic or maybe even pass out.

The entire system is just the result of the brain doing what it is supposed to do to keep the body functioning and protect it. Too much stress leads to problems that can range from upset stomach to anxiety attacks and even as serious as heart attacks.

The more you understand your stress, the better prepared you will be at controlling your body’s response to stress and restoring a calmer state of mind. That is why it is important to do things for relaxation.
